Fall Classes 2022

We are excited to relaunch in-person classes this fall at UAW Region 1!  The registration deadline has been extended to September 29, 2022.  If you are interested in attending classes, please reach out to your local union leadership as soon as possible to get registered!

Note that class sizes will be capped, and registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Active and retired members are invited to join us for classes beginning Tuesday, October 11, 2022.  We are offering four class options, each of which will meet for four sessions on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. Participants will have a choice between morning (10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) or evening (5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.) class meetings. Participants must attend three out of the four class sessions to receive a Certificate of Completion.  We will host a combined graduation celebration during a final session on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

Class offerings this fall include:

TUESDAY CLASSES – AM or PM: (10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1 & Thursday, 11/10)

  • Grievance Handling: This course teaches the skills needed to represent workers with grievances. Topics include: what is and is not a grievance, proper grievance investigation techniques, and written grievance presentation skills.
  • Leadership Essentials: Effective leadership is embedded in every layer of our union and is critical to accomplishing our union’s mission. In this workshop, participants will develop a vision for how our union can become stronger and learn to set goals that create a pathway to success. Participants will also learn best practices of effective leaders, including communication and public speaking skills. This course is designed for both elected local union leaders and members looking to develop their activism within the union.  Standing Committee participation and development will be strongly emphasized. Be prepared to do a lot of self-reflection in this class!

THURSDAY CLASSES – AM or PM: (10/13, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, & 11/10)

  • All About Our Union: This class will provide a foundational overview of everything a member should know about our union and the important role they play within it. We’ll review union structure and values, the basics of bargaining and strikes, and the role of standing committees in our union. Participants should walk away with a broad understanding of how our union works and what it means to be a UAW member.
  • Bread Box to the Ballot Box: This class will build members’ understanding of the important and direct relationship between politics and the quality of life that we enjoy as union members.  We will discuss government structure at the local and federal level, and we will work to understand how the gains we make at the bargaining table are impacted by what takes place in the legislative halls. In a major election year, this class is sure to prove relevant!

All classes are offered at no cost to the member and will be held at UAW Region 1.
