UAW Region 1 Summer Leadership Institute
The UAW Region 1 Summer Leadership Institute will take place June 22–26, 2026, at the Walter and May Reuther UAW Family Education Center in Black Lake, Michigan. Hosted by UAW Region 1 Director LaShawn English, this annual educational program provides members, local union officers, retirees, and emerging leaders with valuable training designed to strengthen leadership skills, build union knowledge, and prepare participants for future challenges. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in courses covering Leadership Roles and Responsibilities, Advanced Grievance Strategies, Bargaining Foundations, Retirees and Technology, CAP 2026, and Emerging Leaders. The Summer Leadership Institute offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced instructors, connect with fellow UAW members from across the region, and develop the tools needed to effectively serve and advocate for the membership. Welcome to UAW Region 1
Region 1 covers the following counties in Michigan: Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Sanilac, Tuscola and part of Wayne (including Detroit). Region 1 also includes Canadian UAW local unions.
Region 1 is made up of a diverse membership including salary, hourly, skilled trades and public sector employees, from engineering and design in the automotive and defense industries, to attorneys in the public sector, to skilled tradespersons, to academics at Wayne State University and Macomb Community College.
