Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank Donation Drive
UAW Local 889 Joint Committies project for 2019 was to collect Children & Adult Diapers along with Feminine Hygiene Products. These products are collected to help fill in the gap that many people that are in need may find themselves in.
Diapers are one of the products that CANNOT be purchased through any government assistance programs. These safety-net programs do not recognize diapers as a BASIC NEED, they are classified along with cigarettes, alcohol and pet food as disallowed purchases. Adult diapers were in need also. We realized that there are many low income seniors who regularly use diapers and their monthly social security checks don't stretch far enough to be able to allow them to change as often as needed.
Our drive was met with great success with donations coming in from the many units of Local 889. Along with the outreach of St. Paul AME Church in GPP.
We were able to collect a RAM truckload of diapers. Many of those who donated decided to give cash. Ms. Veronica Claybrone from the Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank mentioned that cash goes further since the Diaper Bank has the ability to buy in bulk. With that knowledge we were also able to donate $950.
The generosity of our members were greatly appreciated by the Metropolitan Detroit Diaper Bank.
