Historic Triumph: Volkswagen Workers Honored at the 39th Constitutional Convention
When critics said non-union autoworkers in the American South couldn’t organize, the workers at Volkswagen Chattanooga responded with a resounding: "Watch us."
At the 39th UAW Constitutional Convention, delegates gave a thunderous standing ovation to the worker-leaders who broke barriers in the South. In recognition of their relentless determination, bravery, and transformative victory, the workers of Volkswagen Chattanooga were presented with the UAW Social Justice Award on the convention stage.
A Watershed Moment for Labor in the South
The journey for Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga wasn't built overnight. Facing years of intense anti-union pressure and corporate pushback, the 3,200 production and skilled trades workers at the plant refused to back down.
When they voted overwhelmingly to join UAW Local 42, they didn't just win a voice for themselves. They ignited a movement that is re-shaping the industrial landscape across the entire American South.
Following their landmark election, Chattanooga autoworkers locked arms at the bargaining table and secured a historic first contract, proving the true power of solidarity:
- Massive Wage Increases: A 20% across-the-board pay raise reflecting their essential role in VW’s record profits.
- Significant Ratification & Annual Bonuses: $6,550 upfront bonuses plus $2,550 annual payouts over the life of the agreement.
- Locked-In Job Security: Enforceable protections against unilateral job cuts, shift reductions, and outsourcing.
Health & Safety First: Lower out-of-pocket medical costs and dedicated union safety reps on the shop floor.

Receiving the Social Justice Award at the Constitutional Convention represents more than a victory for one plant—it symbolizes the broader revival of worker power.

As delegates gathered in Detroit to chart the future of our union over the next four years, the Chattanooga leaders served as a powerful reminder of what happens when working-class people stand up, fight back, and win together.
