UAW Region 1 Winter Educational Program

UAW Region 1 is offering five weeks of FREE educational workshops beginning Tuesday,
February 11, 2020.  Participants will have a choice of morning (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) or evening (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) workshops.  Each workshop is five consecutive weeks.  Participants must attend three out of four classroom training sessions to receive a certificate of completion.  The certificates will be handed out on the 5th week. 

All classes will be limited to 45 people per class and will be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.

 Workshops being offered this season are: 

 TUESDAY CLASSES – Morning or Evening: (February 11, 18, 25, and March 3rd.) 

  • Understanding Contracts:  This course will build members’ understanding of how to read and interpret union contracts.  Discussion will cover bargaining basics, what goes into a contract, and tricky language interpretation.  Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their own contracts to class for reference.  Prepare yourself for spirited discussion and debate in this class!

Prerequisites:  None.

 THURSDAY CLASSES –  Morning or Evening: (February 13, 20, 27 and March 5th.)  

  •  Grievance Handling:  This course teaches the skills needed to properly represent workers with grievances.  Topics will include how to correctly identify a grievance, proper investigation techniques, and written grievance presentation skills.

Prerequisites:  None

  •  Leadership Essentials:  Effective leadership is embedded in every layer of our union and is critical to accomplishing our union’s mission. In this workshop, participants will develop a vision for how our union can become stronger and learn to set goals that create a pathway to success. Participants will also learn the best practices of effective leaders, including communication and public speaking skills. This course is designed for both elected local union leaders and members looking to develop their activism within the union.  Be prepared to do a lot of self-reflection in this class!

Prerequisites: None.

All workshops will be held at UAW Region 1.  The graduation ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 10th for ALL sessions. 

The registration form (signed by the local) must be returned to UAW Region 1 no later than Thursday, January 30, 2020.  All forms may be faxed to 586-427-7142, sent by U.S. mail, or emailed to  [email protected]   THE PRESIDENT OR FINANCIAL SECRETARY MUST VERIFY THAT THE PARTICIPANT IS A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING. Students should report to class at their selected times.  No confirmation letter will be sent
