Political Action

Our great former President Walter Reuther once said:

"There's a direct relationship between the ballot box and the bread box, and what the union fights for and wins at the bargaining table can be taken away in the legislative halls."

An important part of being a union member is paying attention to the legislation that affects you, both at home and on the job.  We bargain a lot of wins in our union contracts that can easily be reversed as a result of bad legislation.  To ensure that our government works in our interest and not against us, we strive to maintain an educated membership and encourage our members to be politically active at every level of government.  That means voting in every election, monitoring the voting records of elected officials, endorsing candidates who support labor, and promoting pro-worker legislation.  Union members can participate by attending candidate screening events, phone-banking, knocking on doors, and by turning out to vote.

We do this work and more through our Community Action Program, or CAP.  Check back here regularly for updates on what's at stake for us in the political arena and how you can get involved.

At the UAW, we support candidates for public office who support our members and the values that we share. Here's how.

UAW Region 1 local unions are gearing up for the return of the Labor Day March!  Details for Labor Day 2023 can be found in the call letter and pertinent information attachments below.

UAW Region 1 strongly encourages members and their families to exercise their right to vote in every election.  Ensure that your voice is heard by making a plan in advance of Election Day for how and where you will cast your ballot.

In 2018, Michiganders voted overwhelmingly in favor of the statewide ballot proposal 18-3.  The passage of this proposal granted all registered voters in Michigan the right to request an absent voter ballot without providing a reason.

At the UAW, we support candidates for public office who support our members and the values that we share.  Everything that we win at the bargaining table can be taken away at the stroke of a pen by lawmakers, so it is imperative that we elect people to those positions who we can trust to have our backs when we need them.
