2017 Fall Education Program

UAW Region 1 is offering six weeks of FREE education workshops beginning Tuesday, October 3, 2017. Participants will have a choice between morning (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.) or evening (5 – 7 p.m.) workshops. Each workshop is for six weeks.  Participants must attend five out of six training sessions to receive a Certificate of Completion.  The certificates will be handed out the 6th week of class at graduation.  There will be no classes scheduled on Halloween (Tuesday, October 31st ).

TUESDAY CLASSES – Morning or Evening:  October 3, 10, 17, 24, November 7 and 14

 

  • Advanced Arbitration: Participants will be given a grievance file and will spend four weeks working in small groups to prepare an arbitration case.  Participants will use the information and experience gained in previous courses, along with assistance from facilitators, to become advocates.  A mock arbitration hearing will be held during the fifth week of class. Based on the nature of the course, class size IS limited to 16 Students.

    Mandatory Prerequisites: Grievance Handling and Arbitration

     

  • Collective Bargaining: This course will instruct members on how to negotiate a contract. The focus of this class includes bargaining table etiquette, preparation of proposals, information to request before bargaining and many more negotiation tools.

     

  • Grievance Handling: This course teaches the skills needed to represent workers that may have a grievance. Topics include: what is and is not a grievance, grievance investigation techniques, how to write a grievance and grievance presentation skills.

    All workshops will be held at Region 1. The registration form is enclosed and may be duplicated.  THE PRESIDENT OR FINANCIAL SECRETARY FROM THE MEMBER’S LOCAL MUST VERIFY THAT THE PARTICIPANT IS A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING.  The graduation ceremony for all classes will be held on Tuesday, November 14th.  The morning graduation class ceremony will start at 10 a.m. and the evening class ceremony will begin at 5 p.m.  Local Union officers are encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony to congratulate their members. 

All forms must be returned to UAW Region 1 no later than September 30th.  Registration forms may be faxed to 586-427-7142, mailed or hand delivered.  After the forms are submitted, the students should report to class at their selected times. No confirmation letter will be sent.
