Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way, so the UAW Region 1 Women’s Council has decided to make a difference by walking and raising money in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to be held Saturday, October

Today 1 of every 2 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to the American Cancer Society (ACS) for help and support. The donations our team – the UAW Region 1 Warriors - raises will enable investment in groundbreaking breast cancer research, free information, and services for women diagnosed with the disease and access to mammograms for women who need them. Our donations will help more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors celebrate another birthday this year! We are asking you to join us in raising funds in their quest to fight against this horrible disease.

Recently, Region 1 awarded with a traveling trophy from ACS for being the top fundraiser in United States. This was largely achieved by the tremendous efforts and hard work of the Women’s Committee of UAW Local 1264, which raised over $15,000. You can register and donate online under our team name - UAW Region 1 Warriors - at www.makingstrideswalk.org/detroitmi.

As we gear up for the final days of the upcoming general election, the Women’s Council Recreation Committee has planned a day of Politics and Pampering for the women of Region 1 on Sunday, October 14, 2012.

Despite the substantial inroads women have made in the private sector, women in politics continue to be the exception rather than the rule. The Council understands that if women are not actively and visible in our community and the political arena – the concerns of women will not be addressed. At this event, many of our female UAW endorsed candidates are scheduled to attend to talk openly on their platform and encourage more women to get involved with this election and in the community.

The Women Council also have planned a wonderful afternoon of pampering including free facials, massages, Zumba and other fun treatments, as well as tables of area vendors with jewelry, purses and other items for them to purchase if they like.

There is no registration fee or cost to attend. Food will be served; we are requesting your RSVP to Councilwoman Harriett Smith by email at hjsmi7777@sbcglobal.net no later than October 12, 2012.

Please make your members aware of this event so that they can come out for an afternoon of pampering, fun and meet some very dynamic candidates. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Adams Johnson at 586-427-9200.

As most of us are aware, what we do as a union in the upcoming months, will have a tremendous effect on shaping the lives of working people. In light of this very important time and the need to engage our entire membership, the Region 1 Women’s Council will host its first “men’s” event. “Are You Ready to Rumble in 2012?” will be a day of training designed to engage, mobilize and prepare the men of Region 1 for action in the community and in the political arena as well.

This event will be an exciting day designed with the needs of our male membership in mind. Joining the festivities will be former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown. Currently an ESPN analyst and community activist, Lomas will speak to the need of male activism in the community. Participants in the training will also receive information on; how they can be more involved and engaged in our communities; on men’s health issues; and in building our union.

This will be a fun-filled day and is open to everyone; men and women.

Due to the dedication and support of the school’s faculty, along with the hard work and determination of the students, 100 percent of the graduates attend college.
